How to Care for Your Hair After a Professional Keratin Treatment

A professional keratin treatment can transform your hair, leaving it smooth, shiny, and frizz-free. However, to maintain these stunning results, proper aftercare is essential. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to care for your hair post-treatment, with product recommendations from Salon Essentials.

1. Wait Before Washing

After your keratin treatment, it’s crucial to wait at least 72 hours before washing your hair. This waiting period allows the keratin to fully bond with your hair, ensuring longer-lasting results.

2. Avoid the use Sulphates and Sodium Chloride in Shampoos and Conditioners

Sulphates can strip the keratin from your hair, reducing the longevity of your treatment. Look for sulphate-free products like our Sulphate-Free Shampoo and Conditioner to keep your hair smooth and healthy.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) and keratin treatment do not mix well together. SLS is a mild detergent used in many shampoo products to create lather. This ingredient is responsible for stripping colour from hair and washing out keratin from treated hair. Therefore, it is vital to avoid this substance to prolong the duration of your keratin treatment.

Sodium Chloride is the fastest way to remove keratin from your hair as it strips the hair of the keratin very quickly. In simple terms, sodium chloride is essentially salt. Sodium chloride actually causes your scalp to dry out and get irritated. It also removes essential oils and natural moisture created by your scalp. To ensure long-lasting results of your keratin treatment, you must use a sodium chloride-free shampoo.

3. Avoid Tying Your Hair

For the first few day's post-treatment, avoid tying your hair or using hair clips. This can cause dents and disrupt the smooth texture of your hair. Let your hair flow freely to maintain its sleek appearance.

4. Minimize Heat Styling

Excessive heat can damage your keratin-treated hair. When styling, use a heat protectant like our Heat Protectant Spray and keep the temperature on your styling tools low.

5. Don't forget the bed head!

Cotton pillowcases can cause friction, leading to frizz and breakage. Consider trying a silk pillowcase to maintain your hair’s smoothness and reduce friction while you sleep.

6. Avoid Salt Water and Chlorine

We know! it's a bit tough here in the Australian Summer, but both salt water and chlorine can strip the keratin from your hair.  Chlorine can also be present in drinking and shower water in some areas in Australia.  We recommend that you protect your hair by wearing a swim cap or applying a leave-in conditioner to keep your hair well-nourished and hydrated whilst swimming or bathing

7. Regular Touch-Ups

To maintain the benefits of your keratin treatment, schedule regular touch-ups every few months. This will help keep your hair looking its best and extend the life of the treatment.

8. Deep Conditioning Treatments

Regular deep conditioning treatments can help keep your hair hydrated and healthy. Use a Deep Conditioning Mask once a week to nourish your hair and maintain its smooth texture.

9. Avoid Excessive Washing

Washing your hair too often can strip away the keratin. Try to wash your hair no more than twice a week and use dry shampoo like our Dry Shampoo in between washes to keep your hair fresh.

10. Gentle Brushing

Use a wide-tooth comb or a brush designed for delicate hair to avoid breakage. Our Wide-Tooth Comb is perfect for detangling without causing damage.
